BRIN Collaborates on Sorghum Development Research to Support Bioenergy Availability

Published on December 23, 2024

South Tangerang - BRIN PR. Indonesia must reduce carbon emissions by reducing dependence on fossil fuels. One potential solution is the use of biomass, such as sorghum, Head of BRIN's Research Centre for Process Industry Technology and Manufacturing (PRTIPM), Hens Saputra.

“Indonesia must reduce emissions with a target of Net Zero Emissions in 2060 and one of the efforts is to reduce fossil energy, in this case we need other alternative materials and one of the renewable materials is from biomass,” explained Hens during the signing of a collaboration between BRIN and industry on Friday (20/12).

To support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources, BRIN established strategic cooperation with three partners, namely PT Santi Energi Hijau, PT Summit Niaga, and BINEX. This collaboration is focused on research and development of the sorghum value chain as a step to support the availability of bioenergy in Indonesia.

This activity also involves researchers from the Food Crops Research Centre (PRTP) and the Applied Botany Research Centre (PRBT) who are responsible for seed handling, sorghum cultivation, and evaluation of malapari agronomic characters.

Malapari (Pongamia pinata) is one of the most potential biodesel feedstocks to be developed in Indonesia. This plant is spread from Sumatra to Papua.

One of the potential solutions to reduce carbon emissions by reducing dependence on fossil energy is the utilisation of biomass, such as sorghum.

“The main objective of this collaboration is to strengthen the value chain development of sorghum, which is considered as one of the potential feedstocks for bioenergy production in Indonesia. Sorghum is expected to be an environmentally friendly alternative fuel, replacing the use of fossil energy, as well as supporting Indonesia's achievement of its Net Zero Emissions (NZE) target by 2060.” Hens added.

On the same occasion, Director of PT Santi Energi Hijau, Yusuf Reza Shahab, added that the main focus of this collaboration is research on energy transition through planting biofuels, especially sorghum. ‘What we are focusing on in the near future is sorghum, and BRIN supports from upstream, namely planting, to downstream, namely further development,’ he said.

Each external partner in this collaboration has a different role and contribution but supports each other. PT Santi Energi Hijau focuses on land provision, bio-pellet manufacturing, characterisation, and co-combustion testing and evaluation. PT Summit Niaga will provide power generation facilities for co-firing tests, and conduct co-combustion testing and evaluation. Meanwhile, BINEX is responsible for providing sorghum bicolor seeds as well as supporting documents for the delivery of sorghum seeds.

“This cooperation is expected to encourage further investment in research and development of sorghum processing technology. In addition, it also opens up opportunities for local farmers to be actively involved in the bioenergy supply chain, providing a positive impact on the economy and community welfare. This step is in line with global goals to reduce carbon emissions, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and realise more inclusive and sustainable development,” said Hens at the end of her speech.
